The History of Dragon Boating

The History of Dragon Boats and their Connection to the Shuswap is presented in a 3 Part Special radio documentary produced by CKVS 93-7 FM radio in Salmon Arm, British Columbia Canada.

This never-before-told story tells how dragon boating began in North America. Tracing the origin of dragon boating in China over 2,000 years ago, with a legend how racing began, through the arrival of 9 teak dragon boats brought to Canada to celebrate Expo 86 in Vancouver BC and the fascinating connection initiated by the Shuswap Rowing and Paddling Club in 2015 with the Original Wooden Dragon Boat Society in collaboration with the Chinese Cultural Centre Dragon Boat Association and Aspiral Youth Partners in the Shuswap territory of BC to restore the entire fleet.

CKVS 93.7 FM – The Voice of the Shuswap produced and is presenting this documentary as part of their annual fundraising campaign. Due to COVID-19, CKVS is not able to hold a large public gathering event as in previous years to conduct a fundraising initiative and this is one way public radio is working through COVID and keeping fascinating stories like this alive.
