IMPORTANT UPDATE – Tuesday 11 July 2017
We are at a unique and challenging time in the province right now. As with most of us we are worried about friends, family and relatives living in places where fires are burning.
In Salmon Arm, although there were no fires, the community was impacted by the smoke. The air quality index in Salmon Arm on July 11 was at 8 for the day and the same on July 12. This is high risk with recommendations for no physical activity outdoors for older individuals and those with health conditions. The general population was also advised to stay indoors. This prompted discussions with the race organizers and Interior Health to assess potential health impacts to paddlers, volunteers and the general public for the weekend’s dragon boat races.
With no change in sight, we were committed to ensuring that in the best interest of everyone’s health, the difficult decision was made to cancel the event. We were hopeful to re-schedule the festival for a later date in the summer and will keep you posted.
We made this call today (July 11) to make sure people were provided with as much time as possible to adjust their plans.
Thank you for your understanding and we wish you the very best for the rest of this paddling season.
